Museum Temporarily Closing in 2018
The Rogers Historical Museum’s expansion efforts, to provide more exhibitions, larger educational space, room for special events, community gathering space, and state-of-the art storage space is underway. Thanks to our supporters, donors, contractors, architects, and many others the construction of the new Museum campus is on schedule and on budget.
To date, the storage space generously provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Tyson Corporation, the Clayton Eversole Family, the City of Rogers, and many other donors was finished ahead of schedule and under budget. With its completion the museum will be able to place all of its 50,000+ collection under one roof with adequate room for growth over the next 25 to 30 years.
The reuse and repurpose of the historic Hailey Building at 313 S. 2nd Street is still in progress, but major construction is slated to finish in Spring 2018. Exhibit construction is currently in progress and installation of the new gallery spaces, research library, and special events area will begin March 2018. We will announce an exact grand reopening date for December 2018.
So far all of our renovations and construction has been happening at our new facilities, with very little interruption to our current facility, the Key Wing, at 322 S. 2nd Street. However, renovations of the Key Wing are now slated to begin and this facility will be repurposed specifically as an education and meeting space. Beginning in early January, Nabholz will be making minor but important updates through out the gallery spaces, work areas, front entrance, and restrooms. No changes will be made to the Hawkins House, Grandma’s Attic, or the First Street storefront exhibits, which will remain central to education programming. This work, however, will make it impossible for the Museum to remain open to the public. Safety of our visitors, as well as the crews working necessitates a short closure of the museum to the public. We expect the Key Wing to reopen for play dates in the Attic, viewing of our First Street exhibit, and guided tours of the Hawkins House by late summer 2018. The Museum Annex in the historic Post Office at 120 W. Poplar St. will also be unavailable during this time while collections and offices are moved to other locations.
We will continue to meet with individuals regarding collections donations, research inquires, program information, and expansion updates. Please contact the Museum at 479-621-1154 to ensure staff availability to address your needs. We welcome everyone to drive by, watch our social media pages and website for updates as the Museum expands to better serve the people of Northwest Arkansas and visitors from all over. The hard work of those who volunteered to begin the Museum in 1975, the continued support of the City of Rogers, and continued generosity and support of the citizens of Rogers since 1975 has made our current expansion possible.
