You found The Caboose!
This retired caboose from the Frisco line allows visitors to experience the railroad history of Rogers. The arrival of the St. Louis and San Francisco (Frisco) railroad was the reason for the city’s founding in 1881. This caboose was built in 1946 and ran local service lines between Springfield and Thayer, Missouri. A caboose carried a conductor and a rear brakeman, who watched for problems with the train. There would have been a stove for heat and cooking and sometimes sleeping quarters for layovers. The caboose became less common in the 1980s with the addition of a Flashing Rear End Device or FRED. This device sent radio signals to the engineer concerning brake pressure and other information needed to control the train. The caboose was acquired by the city as part of the centennial celebration in 1981. |
